Spirit of '76   posted July 04, 2010

What does freedom feel like?  Have you ever tried to answer this question?  During a mission trip to South America in 1997 I was asked this question, and I have to admit I had trouble answering the young man.  Is it a feeling, a right, a state of mind?  I guess I never thought about what it "felt" like; it was just like breathing.  I've always had it.  Sometimes we need to talk to those who have gone too long without it to discover that as Americans we have something special.

The 4th of July is my favorite time of year because it is uniquely American.  I love the history of this great nation and its humble beginnings.  I was once asked if I could have lived in another time, what would it have been.  Without a doubt it would be the last half of the 1700s, for that is the time when the idea of America's freedom and exceptionalism was born.

There have for certain been difficult times for our country, and we have always risen to the occasion.  Surely those dark days during the Civil War many wondered if the nation would survive intact.  Thank God it did!  We have always been proud of those who defend us, our Constitution, and our way of life. If you are currently serving or have served I say thank you.  Far too often the land of this old world has cracked open to swallow American blood.  Yes, the price of freedom has come at great expense.

As with previous generationis we find ourselves divided again.  A nation adrift without clear, moral leadership.  We can get back on track, but it will take effort from us all.  What does freedom feel like?  It feels like it is slipping away.  We must all find the spirit that our founding fathers did back in '76 and fight for it.  It must be defended.  And it will!

Happy Independence Day!

Beam Me Up, Newt

You've gotta give it to Newt Gingrich--he does know how to cause a stir. Most likely, even after a long 2012 campaign, his idea of a moon colony...
