This Do in Remembrance of Me posted October 30, 2011
Tonight was a special night with my church family. We observed the church ordinance of the Lord's Supper. From a very early age, I can remember this special time in my spiritual journey. Most Baptist churches observe this ordinance every two or three months and make a very special service out of this occasion. It's one of the fondest memories of growing up in a small Baptist church in Arkansas.
The scripture is found in Luke 22:7-20. In these verses Jesus observes the Passover with his twelve disciples, one of whom will soon betray him. After Jesus took bread, broke it, and gave to the disciples, he said, "This is my body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me." He then took the cup and said, "This cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you."
This is, of course, what is known as "The Last Supper." If you've spent much time in the South, you'll probably remember seeing paintings of this in many homes. We had one in our home growing up. I kind of miss it now. It's just a part of who I am, and part of who I will be. For it is the promise of what is to come that is exciting.
With all that is going on in this world, it is comforting as a believer that it comes as no surprise to the Maker of the universe. Turmoil in the Middle East. Nations rising against and threatening Israel. On our side of the globe, difficult economic times, and a very heated election in full swing for next year. I'm glad to know that this was forseen by the One who gave His all, that through Him we might be saved. "This do in remembrance of me"? Yes! We do remember Him. And because of Him we know that this old world is not our eternal home. Even so, Lord, come quickly!
